On Fate
and Predicting the Future
By
Annette Jones
The other day on a certain MySpace group that I enjoy, we got into debating Fate and
predicting the future.  My opponent said that predicting the future implied that there was
such a thing as Fate, but that the very act of predicting the future changes the future,
thereby proving that there is NO such thing as Fate.  A paradox, a paradox, a most ingenious
paradox.  (Come on, sing along, everybody!)

He provided an example:  If he looked into the future and saw that he was going to die in a
motorcycle crash, he just wouldn’t buy a motorcycle!  Poof!  I, of course, pointed out that just
because he won’t buy a bike, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he won’t die via motorcycle
mishap.  A motorcycle could jump the curb and squash him, or he could be a passenger on
someone else’s ride, or a bike could run his car off the road.

At this point my dapper debater became a bit irritated and took a higher power’s name in
vain.  He gave another example:  If he looked into the future and saw that this woman was
going to fall in love with a man with a rose tattoo, and this man would end up being a wife-
beater, then all this woman would have to do would be to avoid men with rose tattoos.  Once
again it is Fate implied, Fate denied.

There are a number of holes in this one, as well, which I decided not to impart to the dear
darlin’.  I’ll share them with you, however:  First, a lot of men have rose tattoos, and the
vast majority of them are not abusers.  Second, unless she makes all her dates strip naked
before she will go out with them, the chances that she will know he has a tattoo of any kind
is slim.  Third, the man in question could be uninked when they meet and receive the tattoo
after they’re already married with children.

I decided not to post the above qualifiers in the interests of world peace.  And also because
we were arguing on the same side!  (Personally, I wasn’t arguing, per se, I was just enjoying
the mental image I had of this guy with steam coming out his ears.)  We were more or less
saying the same thing.

Predicting future events is difficult, because the future is fluid and changeable.  Every
decision we make, every step we take, every thought we think affects the outcome of our
lives.

I do not believe that there is any such thing as Fate.  Each one of us decides our OWN Fate.
You could be leaving the store one day and turn left to take your normal route home, trip on
a rock and break your arm.  If you had turned right instead of left, and taken a different
path, you could have found a $100 bill lying in the gutter.

Looking into the future is like looking down a road.  If you can see the danger lurking down
one road, like a motorcycle crash, you can choose to take another road.  Each road has its
dangers and its joys.  WE decide what road to travel.  WE can choose to change streets at any
time we desire.  WE hold our own Fates in our hands.
